Aqua Group Exercise Instructors are responsible for ensuring the safety and exercise efficacy of his/her class participants through education, exercise program design, and proper exercise technique. They are also responsible for maintaining professionalism and member rapport as well as continuing education with an emphasis on enhancing the spiritual, physical and mental health of each client/member. 



  • Instruct a safe and fun class. This means showing low intensity options for those who are not able, or do not wish to do high intensity movements
  • Instructors are expected to teach each class according to the description of the class listed on the schedule
  • Each instructor is responsible for teaching his/her class or finding a sub
  • Inform and educate participants while teaching class - move around and correct form overlooking poor form may cause injury
  • Remain updated in the field of fitness through literature you receive and/or through information available at the YMCA as well as by attending workshops and continuing education opportunities
  • Attend all meetings and/or trainings
  • Must be able to work well with supervisors, co-workers, and clients/members
  • Must be personable, interactive, helpful, and exhibit a positive attitude
  • Must exhibit a sincere desire to educate clients in established fitness principle
  • Must be able to work independently, with multiple clients, and maintain strict confidentiality
  • Must be teachable, dependable, and highly motivated
  • Must be a model of a healthy lifestyle
  • Always be friendly and cordial to all members and guests
  • Prepare music and adjust stereo volume to member comfort level
  • Introduce yourself to the class, announce the title and skill level of the class, ask if there are any new participants to the class or exercise, and make your best effort to accommodate a majority of the participants of the class while following the class level advertised (i.e. choreography and intensity level used)
  • Other Duties as assigned.

to change, and seeks opportunities in the change process. Accurately assesses personal feelings, strengths and limitations and how they impact relationships. Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform well; uses best practices and demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology.




  • Keep all certifications, including CPR and First Aid up to date
  • Physical ability to lead &/or demonstrate class exercises demonstrated by successfully passing a YMCA location/class specific audition
  • Ensure that the pool deck is well maintained and safe for classes at all times
  • Ability to communicate verbally to large and small groups of members and the ability to work with varying fitness levels and ages
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency




  • All instructors must hold a nationally recognized, current Aqua Fitness Group Exercise certification.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification and completion of all YMCA training
  • Current YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles certification (within 90 days from date of hire)
  • Complete within 30 days of hire: Child Abuse Prevention Training; BLS CPR; First Aid
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community and successful clearance of background check. 



Aqua Group Exercise I


  • Hold CPR/AED, First Aid, Oxygen Administration (within 60 days of employment) and Healthy Lifestyles Principles (within 90 days of employment)
  • Minimum 0-2 years’ experience instructing aqua fitness
  • National and/or Specialty Certification (at least 1)


Aqua Group Exercise II


  • Group Exercise I with Additional Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience instructing aqua fitness
  • National and/or Specialty Certification (at least 1)


Aqua Group Exercise III


  • Group Exercise II with Additional Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience instructing Aqua fitness
  • National and/or Specialty Certification (at least 1)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related health and wellness field



Group Exercise Instructors must be able to stand for extended periods of time, walk, and bend over, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull and move, lift and/ or carry up to 15 pounds repeatedly, at or above waist height. They must also be able to perform a variety of exercises with proper form and correct client/member’s form confidently and professionally.
