Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Swim Instructors lead, instruct and motivate students in assigned swimming classes. S/He provides a safe, friendly and welcoming environment for participants.

Swimming is a basic life skill. We are looking for people who take the knowledge and safety of swimming seriously, but can also create a fun environment for the kids. At the YMCA we deliver high quality swim lessons to our members and nonmembers. That being said, we require a certification for teaching swim lessons. The YMCA will take care of all of your training and even pay you to get certified. The certification process is easy, however you are required to be able to preform at least 4 of the 6 swimming strokes.

 

Group lesson hours:

Monday: 8:30-10:30am

Tuesday: 6-8pm

Thursday: 9-11am and 6-8pm

Saturday: 9-11am

 

Private Lesson hours vary.

Responsibilities

  1. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  7. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  9. Actively participates in department and branch meetings and/or trainings.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. At least 16 years of age
  2. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  3. YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent and BLS, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration
  4. Complete within 30 days of hire and must be kept current while employed: Child Abuse Prevention Training
  5. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of
    the community and successful clearance of background check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Recreational environment; aquatics facility. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, speak clearly, hear and use hands and fingers.
  • The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or move a maximum of 25 lbs.
  • Intermittent use of pool to instruct participants.
