Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Group Exercise Instructors facilitate group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels; effectively building community within the class and modify class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs.

Responsibilities

  1. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  2. Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being.
  3. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  4. Engages with participants by introducing self and participants to the class, announce the title and skill level of the class, ask if there are any new participants to the class or exercise, and make your best effort to accommodate a majority of the participants of the class while following the class level advertised (i.e. choreography and intensity level used).
  5. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
  6. Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  7. Celebrates achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being.
  8. Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  9. On time for scheduled classes.
  10. Actively participates in department and branch staff meetings and/or related trainings.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • All instructors must hold a nationally recognized, current Group Exercise certification preferably from one of the following organizations: YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise, AFAA, ACE, NETA, Yoga Fit, Stott Pilates, Les Mills, Mad Dogg, or Zumba
  • Ability to communicate verbally to large and small groups of members and the ability to work with varying fitness levels and ages
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications
  • Current ACE, ACSM, NASM Group Exercise and/or Personal Training Certification
  • Complete within 30 days of hire: Child Abuse Prevention Training; BLS CPR; First Aid
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of
    the community and successful clearance of background check.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Gym/Fitness Studio environment, must be able to stand for extended periods of time, walk, and bend over, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull and move, lift and/ or carry up to 15 pounds repeatedly, at or above waist height. They must also be able to perform a variety of exercises with proper form and correct client/member’s form confidently and professionally.
  • Hours will include evening and weekend work.
