Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  Swim Coaches are accountable for the planning, organization, delivery and quality of the Swim Team program by developing technical skills and understanding of the sport of swimming. 

Responsibilities

  1. Plan and instructs practices in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans according to age group and developmental levels.
  2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  5. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  6. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  7. Assure compliance with rules, standards, and guidelines and that all aquatics safety procedures are followed. Assure compliance with state and local regulations from aquatics and swimming governing bodies.
  8. Assist in YMCA fundraising activities and special events as requested.
  9. Actively participates in department and branch meetings and/or trainings.
  10. All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Experience in competitive swimming.
  • Complete within 30 days of hire:
    • Child Abuse Prevention Training
    • BLS, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration
    • YMCA Lifeguard Certification
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of
    the community and successful clearance of background check.

  • Recreational environment; aquatics facility. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, speak clearly, hear and use hands and fingers.

  • Intermittent use of pool to instruct participants.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions required.
