  • Overview

    This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Leads, instructs and motivates students in assigned swimming classes. Provides a safe, friendly and welcoming environment for participants.


    1. Assist in instructing swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
    2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
    3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
    4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
    5. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
    6. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
    7. Actively participates in department and branch meetings and/or trainings.
    8. Performs other duties as assigned.

    1. At least 15 years of age (must have work permit)
    2. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards
    3. Complete before first shift: YMCA cause & culture training; Aquatics-specific training; Child Abuse Prevention Training (provided by the YMCA)
    4. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community and successful clearance of background check


    • Recreational environment; aquatics facility. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, speak clearly, hear and use hands and fingers.
    • The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or move a maximum of 25 lbs.
    • Intermittent use of pool to instruct participants.
